Step 1 — Verify the challan is real
Open the Vehicle Information app or echallan.parivahan.gov.in. Search by your registration number. Note challan ID, date, location, fine amount.
Step 2 — Examine the photographic evidence
Each e-challan has a CCTV / camera photograph attached. Click the challan to expand. Verify: is it actually your vehicle? Plate clearly visible? Time stamp accurate?
Step 3 — File a dispute on Parivahan
On the e-challan page, click 'Disputed Challan'. Choose reason: wrong vehicle, wrong location, vehicle was sold, vehicle was stolen, technical error. Upload supporting evidence (photo, GPS log, sale agreement, FIR).
Step 4 — Contact issuing authority
If dispute portal doesn't respond in 15 days, find the issuing authority's email on the challan. Send a polite mail with challan ID + evidence + your contact number. Most states reply within 7 days.
Step 5 — Approach Virtual Court / Lok Adalat
If still pending, the challan auto-forwards to Virtual Court (vcourts.gov.in) or quarterly Lok Adalat. Both allow online appearance. Lok Adalat usually waives 50-100% of unfair fines.
Step 6 — File a representation in writing
Last resort: a written representation to the local Traffic Police DCP / SP office. Attach all evidence. Reply guaranteed within 30 days under Citizens Charter.
